Meet Monday: Lilly Brown

Lilly Brown, a senior economics major, is involved in multiple campus organizations, including Humans of Syracuse University and Redemption A Capella.
Lilly Brown does not allow herself to have comfort zones.
“If you don’t give yourself limits, you don’t end up stopping yourself,” she said. “That way you end up being friends with everyone and doing everything.”
The senior economics major’s college career follows her life motto. At Syracuse University, Brown has been involved with various activities from singing in Redemption A Cappella to spelunking with the Syracuse University Outing Club, where she currently serves as treasurer.
Brown’s interests have led her to meet and experience all types of people on campus and in the Syracuse community.
After asking the Humans of Syracuse University page to share a video she made called “Hidden Minorities,” Brown reached out to the creator of the page about making more videos. Instead of making more videos, the creator of Humans of Syracuse University offered Brown the opportunity to become its photographer.
“I have my camera with me most of the time,” she said. “I look for interesting stories, anything that jumps out.”
Brown has photographed various interesting people, like long-time SU employees Shirley and Sammy from the Blinker Deli, students playing in the snow and Fred, a SU plumber who plays piano in Hendricks Chapel during his lunch break.
Brown is also a talented musician who sings and plays various instruments like the piano and ukulele. For three years, Brown was a member of Redemption A Cappella, which focuses on performing and raising awareness to African American music and culture.
Brown is aware that her membership in Redemption A Cappella is odd, but said she does not mind.
“It was never weird for me,” said Brown. “I just love that kind of music and didn’t hesitate to try out.”
She also did not hesitate to submit an audition for an online cover contest by Sara Bareilles’ Facebook page. Her individual submission covering “Hercules” won the competition and will be shared with more than one million of Barreilles’ fans through Facebook.
Brown hopes to work in Los Angeles in a news studio or in the music industry after graduating.
Said Brown: “Those are things I can work on forever and never get tired of it.”
