Shafer waits to assess injury situation

Scott Shafer didn’t have an update on injured wide receiver Brisly Estime or any of Syracuse’s other injured players during his weekly teleconference on Tuesday. The SU head coach said he would wait until Thursday when the Atlantic Coast Conference requires teams to release an injury report to provide further details.

“We’re like everyone around the country. Everyone’s banged up and you’re fighting the grind,” Shafer said. “And that’s football.”

Estime missed his first game since entering the starting lineup when he broke a bone in his hand prior to the Orange’s 59-3 loss to No. 2 Florida State on Saturday. On Monday, the freshman tweeted that there was a “50-50” chance that he plays on Saturday against Pittsburgh. Estime later deleted the tweet.

“We’ll know more Thursday,” Shafer said. “We haven’t been on the practice field yet, so I’m anxious to see how the kids do and some will do better than others, but for me it would just be guessing and I hate to do that.”

Syracuse also lost cornerback Julian Whigham, running back Prince-Tyson Gulley and Jarrod West during the Orange’s loss to the Seminoles.

Whigham was hospitalized with a lung contusion and stayed in Tallahassee (Fla.) Memorial Hospital on Saturday night while the team returned to Central New York.

Gulley reinjured his ankle during the loss — he originally hurt it in a win against Maryland. Shafer didn’t have an update on his status. West suffered a collarbone injury during a big hit late in the first half, but after the game Shafer said that tests came back negative and that he would be good to go.

“We’re going to find out more every day as we move forward, but this point in time we’re just fighting the good fight,” Shafer said. “We’re hoping to do a good job getting some guys back in the training room. And if they’re back, great. And if we have a couple kids that aren’t back, that’s a great opportunity for the next guy.”
