First groups agree to play Dome block party

Two of the four groups scheduled to perform at this year’s Block Party have officially announced their commitment to the event.

Talib Kweli and Northern State will be performing in the Carrier Dome on Sunday, April 25, said Rich Pedine, a co-director of University Union concerts and a senior public relations major.

Pedine said tickets should go on sale today but might be delayed until Monday. Doors to the Block Party will open at 7 p.m. and it should start by 8 p.m. Tickets for students with an SUID will cost $5 and be available at the Carrier Dome and Schine Student Center box offices.

Two more acts have yet to be announced within the next two days pending contracts, Pedine said. One of the acts will be a solo artist, and the other a group with both males and females. All of the groups are hip-hop based.

Pedine said that he unsuccessfully tried to get in contact with one of the group’s managers throughout the day yesterday.

‘We are two weeks away,’ Pedine said. ‘So, we’d like to start getting things wrapped up.’

Pedine said $123,000 was allocated to this year’s block party. Not quite all the money will be spent. The money is directed to the artists, production staff and building usage fees.

Pedine said the concert board creates a wish-list of artists every year, and all of the groups coming this year have been mentioned before.

‘They are artists that the campus will respond to,’ Pedine said.
