After beating its first ranked opponent of the season and handling unranked Bucknell, Syracuse (5-1) recovered in the Division I National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll by moving up four slots to No. 19.
Last week, the Orange stumbled in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Poll, sliding down to No. 23 with a 2-1 loss to unranked Cornell. But Friday’s 2-1 overtime win over then-No.14 Saint Joseph’s and a 3-1 victory against Bucknell vaulted them back up the rankings.
Over the weekend, freshman Charlotte de Vries recorded two goals to add to her team-leading season total of six scores. Laura Graziosi, Chiara Gutsche and Carolin Hoffmann also scored in the victories.
Every Atlantic Coast Conference team remains ahead of Syracuse in the national rankings ahead of conference play, which begins this weekend.
Syracuse faces its toughest test yet on Friday, when No. 5 Virginia visits J.S. Coyne Stadium for the Orange’s first ACC game of the year. SU is 2-0 at home so far.
