After losing to two top-10 opponents this past weekend, Syracuse (11-8, 4-6 Atlantic Coast) slid back from No. 28 to No. 30 in the Oracle/ITA Division I Women’s Rankings. Gabriela Knutson shot up from No. 40 to No. 20 after going 2-1 against ranked opponents since the last singles rankings were released two weeks ago. This includes a victory over North Carolina’s Makenna Jones on Friday, then ranked No. 5.

Miranda Ramirez is now ranked No. 82, moving up from No. 90 after going 2-1 during that stretch. Despite the singles success, Knutson and Ramirez dropped from No. 71 to No. 90 in the doubles rankings. The pair has now lost four-straight matches together although three of them were ranked opponents. They faced two top-10 pairings last weekend against North Carolina and NC State.

The Orange try not focus on rankings when it comes to preparation, players said. Knutson said she makes sure not to know her future opponent’s ranking so she doesn’t overthink the match when she plays. But Syracuse does keep track of where it is in the team rankings.

“Every single time it comes out we send it to the group chat and so we definitely do care a lot about the rankings and it’s kind of a pride thing,” Knutson said after Friday’s match. “Like when we were No. 10, we were very proud of that.”

Syracuse has floated around No. 30 in the rankings since falling from that No. 10 spot. Its next chance to climb back up comes this weekend when it hosts Pittsburgh on Friday followed by No. 27 Miami on Sunday. A road matchup with No. 4 Duke looms after that on April 12.
