Syracuse falls to Purdue, 4-3, in 8 innings to start Big 10/ACC Challenge
Syracuse fell to Purdue, 4-3, in eight innings Friday afternoon in the Orange’s first game of the Big 10/ACC Challenge in Atlanta.
It took the two teams over two and a half hours and extra innings, but a walk-off single from freshman pitcher Maddie Damon proved to be the deciding factor for Purdue (4-2) in the one-run game.
After entering the game in the sixth and throwing the final 2.1 innings of the game, Damon laced a bases-loaded hit to left-center, scoring Kaylah Hampton from third and carrying the Boilermakers to the win.
Junior right-hander Sydney O’Hara got the start for the Orange (1-4), lasting 2.2 innings, earning two strikeouts and allowing no earned runs. Sophomore AnnaMarie Gatti entered in for relief for SU, pitching 4.2 innings, striking out three and surrendering all four runs.
The Orange was lead offensively by sophomore Rachel Burkhardt. The right fielder went 2-for-4 at the plate and scored two runs for SU. She was aided by catcher Olivia Martinez, who went 1-for-3 and scored a run.
Lilly Fecho got the start on the hill for for Purdue. The senior southpaw threw 5.2 innings, struck out seven and allowed three earned runs. She was relieved by Damon, who posted three strikeouts and zero earned runs.
The Orange next faces Ohio State at 10 a.m. on Saturday and Purdue at 12:30 in the second game of a doubleheader.
