Phil Wheddon on Strong statement: ‘I’m glad that she’s come out and said something’

Hanna Strong released an apologetic statement on Tuesday night, and Syracuse women’s soccer head coach Phil Wheddon discussed Strong’s statement on Wednesday morning.

“We have policies and procedures by which the team operates, let alone the university. I’m glad that she’s come out and said something,” Wheddon said. “I think that’s important. There are codes of conduct for everyone.

“We try, we uphold the university’s code of conduct, but we also have the way that we operate as a team.”

Strong, who is suspended indefinitely from the team, apologized for calling an unidentified person a “f*ggot-a** n*gger” in a video that went viral on Saturday afternoon.

Wheddon said he’s had no concerns about the composure of his team over the past few days.

Said Wheddon: “Hopefully she can progress and move past this unfortunate incident.”
