Syracuse seniors run impressive times, underclassmen continue to grow

The Syracuse track and field team finished its pre-conference schedule this past weekend.

Most of the team traveled to Cornell for the Cornell Marc Deneault Invitational, while the women’s distance medley relay competed at Notre Dame in the Notre Dame Alex Wilson Invitational.

SU seniors dominated competition Saturday, as Jaquan Holland, Donald Pollitt and Michelle Riley were all able to win their respective races.

Holland took first in the 200-meter dash, finishing in just 21.68 seconds. Pollitt took gold in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.76 seconds. And Riley ran a time of 2:14.78 to win the 800-meter run.

While the seniors were able to take gold, SU’s underclassmen continued to prosper. Seven of the eight runners who set personal records over the weekend were either a freshman or sophomore.

Freshman David Stankiewicz set a new personal record in the 800-meter run, finishing with a time of 2:01.18 to take 13th place. Fellow freshman Nick Ryan came just shy of taking gold, but still finished with his best time to take second in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:30.21.

Sophomore Shaina Harrison, junior Sabrina Cammock and freshmen Sierra Vaden and Regine Hunter all set new personal records in the 60-meter dash.

Harrison finished just five hundredths of a second short of the school record with a time of 7.37 seconds to take second place in the competition. Cammock finished right behind her to take third with a time of 7.55, Vaden finished in fifth at 7.80 and Hunter came in sixth at 7.81.

Sophomore Bridget Twomey set her new personal best in the mile, coming in eighth with a time of 5:17.36.

Sophomores Fiona Hendry and Rebecca Skodis both finished with their best times in the 3,000-meter run, running a 10:11.15 and 10:17.17, respectively.

At Notre Dame, the women’s distance medley relay, consisting of sophomores Rebecca Robinson and Margo Malone, freshman Sydney Leiher and senior Margo Malone, finished in third place with a time of 11:14.06.

The track and field team will travel to Clemson for the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championship this weekend, which begins on Thursday.
