Syracuse will return to Fort Drum for week of training camp

Syracuse will take a week of training camp to Fort Drum for the second consecutive season, SU Athletics announced in a press release on Wednesday.

Last season, former head coach Doug Marrone brought the Orange to the military reservation for the first time. New head coach Scott Shafer, who was Marrone’s defensive coordinator last year, is continuing that tradition with practices at Fort Drum during the week of Aug. 12.

“We are excited to continue our great relationship with the fine men and women stationed at Fort Drum as we enter our second year of holding training camp on-post,” Shafer said in the release. “It is a unique opportunity for our players and staff to be around the people who defend this country and for all of us to learn from their leadership and sacrifice.”

SU players will live in the barracks, practice on Sligh Field, eat in the Army Dining Facility and coaches will hold meetings in the Army Battalion Headquarters. The military-style training will carry on to the practice field, as well, where players and coaches will participate in Army physical training and leadership seminars, among other military activities.

The week will conclude with a scrimmage on Aug. 15 played in front of the soldiers of the 10th Mountain Division and their families.

“We value the relationship we have with the University and all our community partners in the great state of New York,” said Col. Sam Whitehurst, 3rd Brigade Commander of the 10th Mountain Division. “I’d like to thank Coach Shafer and Chancellor Cantor for their continued support for this event, which provides us both with the opportunity to learn and develop better leaders within each of our formations.”
